Presenter: Ellen Roth, a Brooklyn, New York City native, is a lifelong ASL user and a pioneer in the interpreting field. Certified as an interpreter in 1981 with the RSC and later earning CDI certification in 2004, Ellen brings decades of expertise to her work. She has excelled as an interpreter, translator, DASL, writer, trainer, teacher, consultant, speaker, and advocate for rights and accessibility. Ellen is an independent contractor specializing in legal settings and live TV streaming, where her skills and passion for communication shine. Her dedication to equity and inclusion continues to impact countless individuals and communities.

Objectives: Deaf interpreters will explore the evolution of interpreting, including the cultural, social, and historical contexts that shaped the profession. They will understand the guiding philosophies of interpreting, such as linguistic equality, cultural mediation, and ethical principles; gain knowledge of legal terminology, courtroom procedures, and the unique demands of interpreting in legal settings; be able to articulate the role of Deaf interpreters in creating equitable communication experiences and the importance of maintaining cultural and linguistic integrity; demonstrate understanding and sensitivity in DeafBlind interpreting, discussing different methods such as ProTactile.
