Mentoring

New Approach to Mentoring...
A Call for Mentors!!!!

Having a mentor can be a fabulous experience. When the stars align...schedules match up, clients consent and the mentoring process begins. But what happens when you have finally found someone to mentor you, and you just can't get your schedules to sync up? Or, for one reason or another, the mentoring experience doesn't come to fruition? Sound familiar?

The NYC Metro RID board has been brainstorming ways to rectify this situation so that we can try something new. We are calling for interpreters to sign up to learn how to become a different kind of mentor.

As a mentor, you will be a contact person for your “mentee”. An experienced person in the community they can call or chat with via email, about new interpreting experiences they are taking on, or even to talk about their feelings upon entering this field.   Although you may not be providing "on the job" mentoring, you will be providing an invaluable service by simply being available to talk, answer questions, give feedback, and most importantly to be a bridge connecting newer interpreters to the community of more experienced ones.

Do you remember when you were just getting started and all you needed in order to take that first job was a little encouragement from a friend who knows how intimidating that first step is?  Then, after the job was done, calling that person to unload all the feelings, thoughts, successes and failures of the day? Everyone needs that one person to confide in, a person to give a fresh perspective on things, a person who can pull from their own experiences and offer a different way to handle a situation.

If you would like to be that person for someone, please contact Dani Schuller:

Sincerely,
The Metro Board
